Spades
Spades is a strategic multiplayer card game designed for four players, using a standard 52-card deck. In this turn-based game, players take on the role of the dealer, with each player dealing cards in succession. The winner is determined after five rounds, with the objective being to accumulate as many tricks (points) as possible in each round. Players must adhere to the rule of following suit and playing the highest card to secure a trick, with spades designated as the trump suit in this classic game.
A round commences once each player receives 13 cards and places bids on the number of tricks they anticipate winning. The player with the highest score at the conclusion of five rounds emerges as the victor.
Deal
Any player can assume the role of the first dealer, passing on this responsibility in a clockwise manner. The dealer distributes all cards individually, face down, ensuring that each participant holds 13 cards. Subsequently, players examine their hands.
Bidding
Starting from the player to the right of the dealer and proceeding clockwise, each participant announces a number representing the tricks they commit to winning, with a minimum bid of 1 and a maximum typically capped at 8. These bids are referred to as "calls" throughout the game.
How To Play
The individual to the right of the dealer leads the first trick, followed by the winner of each subsequent trick.
Any card may be played initially, requiring the other three players to follow suit when possible. Should a player lack cards of the same suit, they must play a spade, provided it is sufficiently high to surpass any spades already in play. The player with the highest spade or highest card of the lead suit wins each trick.
If a player lacks cards of a particular suit, they are considered "off" that suit. When off the led suit and devoid of spades in that trick, playing a spade is mandatory if available. In case there is already a spade in play, playing a higher spade becomes necessary. If only lower spades are held, players can strategically utilize these cards or opt for another suit entirely.
Scoring
To achieve success, players must attain the number of tricks they called or exceed this amount by one trick. Scoring is accumulative based on successful calls: should a player reach their bid, points equal to their call are added; failing to meet the bid results in a subtraction of points. Following the final round, the winner is determined by total points accumulated across all games played. For example, calling 4 tricks requires winning at least 4 tricks for points gain; securing three or fewer tricks results in point deduction.
